Surfing
The surfing possibilities in Nicaragua are responsible for the majority of visitors to our country, and Hacienda Pura Vista is ideally situated for the enjoyment of this sport, as it is located only minutes from Maderas Beach, a beach/point break that offers challenging waves for the beginner, intermediate, as well as expert level surfers, depending on the conditions at hand. Although it is the most popular break in Nicaragua, this spot handles crowds quite well, and as a rule, good surf etiquette is the norm. Additionally, many other spots are located to the north as well as to the south, ranging in difficulty levels from mellow to extreme, and although many are accessible via land trans-portation, several can only be reached by boat.

Hacienda Pura Vista is now working in partnership with good friends and fellow long time surfers, Scott Behrens and Liz Hart-Behrens, proud owners of nearby Rancho Cecilia. In conjunction with them, we offer surfboard rentals, surfing lessons, as well as transportation to the various surf spots in the area. Please check out ranchocecilianicaragua.com for more information regarding these services.

We also can arrange for surfing (and fishing) boat trips with Action Tours out of San Juan Del Sur and from Mango Rosa, departing directly from Marsella beach, right below the house.

Other activities

Local activities and attractions are many. Beside the option of surfing their waves, the local beaches provide for great walks and are accessible on foot for miles from the house. Explore a lava tunnel cave, marvel at the critters in the tide pools, snorkel in the clear waters, watch turtle egg laying and hatching on Playa marsella, kayak to our very own “secret bay” in one of the three kayaks provided by the hacienda, stop by one of the six beach area eateries for lunch or a cold refreshment, or simply marvel at the natural beauty of this truly incredible coastline. Keep your eyes open for whale broaching offshore!

Have you ever played Frisbee or “disc” golf? Enjoy a challenging round or two at Marsella valley’s very own course owned by my good friend Vince's. It winds through Marsella valley, occasionally using parts of a trail that is adjacent to the Rio Marsella, and is only a short walk from the house. See marsellavalley.com for further details.

Or, for a pleasant change of pace, a short distance farther inland you will find the Mango Rosa resort, with it’s full service bar, restaurant and swimming pool. Lounge at the pool enjoying refreshments and snacks, or enjoy an excellent full breakfast, lunch, or dinner at a reasonable price. Wireless internet service is available there at no cost, as well as a satellite big screen TV along with a great sound system. If you are not up to the approximately one mile walk and do not have a car available, Greg and Chad will provide free transportation to there and back to the house.

Needless to say, San Juan Del Sur, only a 15 minute drive away, offers a multitude of shopping, dining, and nightlife activities.

Depending on the length of your stay, it would be a shame not to visit some of the other wonders that Nicaragua has to offer. Several worthwhile day trips can be arranged, and due to the close proximity of many locations to San Juan Del Sur, it is possible to combine visits to more than spot in one day. Volcan Masaya, the Catarina lookout over Laguna Apoyo, Zip-line tours and rain forest trails on Volcan Mombacho, a stroll through the beautiful colonial town of Granada, shopping trips to the old market in Masaya, or to Nicaragua’s town for fantastic examples of local pottery, San Juan De Oriente, are all possible destinations (but not all on the same day!). Dedicated day trips to isla Ometepe or to Playa Coco to witness sea turtles laying their eggs in the sand (a night trip) are other possibilities. Depending on the size of your party, guided tours can be supplied by us via Hacienda Pura Vista’s Land Cruiser (up to five persons) or for larger groups we can arrange for one of three companies in SJDS to provide guided tours via comfortable A/C equipped vans.
